People have mixed views regarding covering up while breastfeeding. For me, I cover up when in public places where I may not feel completely comfortable, but I am slowly learning to feel comfortable in more places, so I don't need to cover as often. I have known people who felt 'offended' by women just whipping out a boob and feeding their kids in public. While I have learned over time that it isn't offensive (I used to be not nearly as open-minded), I wouldn't want someone else to develop a negative opinion of breastfeeding for that reason alone.
I'm actually trying to create my own cover with a more breathable fabric, some cinching on the bottom, and a neck thing that won't strangle you when tightened. In the mean time, I found this information on someone else's blog:
Free Udder Covers (just pay $10 shipping). They normally cost $32.00 but you can use the coupon code Family2010 at checkout and the amount will be automatically deducted. The coupon will work on any item in their store.

So about this time last year, I heard about the free Udder Cover deal, which I think they run almost constantly. Paid $10 for shipping, which seemed like a good deal since the item was free, but it was not. It took close to 2 months to arrive and its a piece of junk. Poorly made out of super cheap material. Not worth it at all. I think they just make money off shipping - its really that bad.
I do have a bebe au lait cover that I bought on clearance for about $15 (it came with two burp cloths that are kind of underwhelming) and I loved it until jack was about 3 months old and figured out how to whip it off. I found it tended to draw attention when most of the time, no one ever notices what I am doing when I nurse him in public. I usually just try to pay attention and cover up when he pulls off. I'm intrigued by your new nursing cover idea...I think it would work well with a material like athletic shorts are made of - that kind of light mesh stuff - since really that would cover even though you can see through it (you would have to be looking pretty hard).
That athletic mesh was exactly what I was envisioning...now I just need to find an organic version. The lining in the Gro Baby diapers is actually kinda like that. I was thinking of contacting them and asking if they make their own fabric or buy it else where....
I think most athletic wear materials are man-made, not natural fiber, so that might be tough to find.
I came here to post what Jennifer already said: those Udder covers are total junk and not worth the $10. As far as using a cover in general, I think you know how I feel about that ;) I wish we lived in a world where nursing in a public was just a part of life and no one even paid any attention to it. I personally don't use a cover and don't plan on ever using a cover. However, I think covers are OK if they are for the MOTHER'S comfort, not for anyone else's. Again, I wish the world was such that moms had no problem nursing in public because people recognized it for what it is: simply, a mom feeding her baby, nothing more, nothing less.
Yeah, I've definitely gotten a lot more comfortable w/o the cover, especially now that Lydia wants to lift it up every time anyway. For me, I knew I wanted to breastfeed once she was born and I instantly realized how amazing it is, but it took me some time to feel comfortable doing it around others. With the second kid, I have a feeling I won't care who sees me where, as I'm getting somewhat desensitized to caring now anyway.
I wish I would have read this before we paid for shipping and received our "free" udder cover in the mail the other day...
